up the scent of Duff or his horse. Duff thought about unsheathing his rifle and popping the bastard, here and now, but decided against it. What if he missed? It would be a tricky enough shot from this angle. And if he missed, would he be able to elude a riled-up fella like that big, mean-looking bastard? Duff decided to stay where he was. He had his own reasons for being out here on his own, and no reason to offer up his life for Taggart's pay, alone, without anyone to back his play on a night-shrouded mountain. He would kill the buckskin-wearing bastard another day. Maybe tomorrow.

When Skye vanished from sight, Duff rode on. He had thought of the perfect way to cover his role in the death of Rowdy. Taggart would have his ass, sure enough, if he learned that a good hand had been lost because Duff had disobeyed direct orders and tried to ambush Skye. He rode hard and encountered no one.

He pulled in at the spot where he and Rowdy had ambushed Skye, or tried to. Rowdy's corpse remained near that of his horse. Duff broke off a long branch from a nearby tree, using the leafy branch to erase the tracks, every trace, of his horse's hoofprints in the dirt.

He retrieved the Sharps .50-caliber. Too bad, he thought. He wouldn't have minded keeping the rifle for his own. But of course it would need to be near wherever he left Rowdy's body to be found.

He stepped into the saddle and rode back in the direction of the ranch, staying to the trees.

He smiled. Taggart had liked Rowdy. Everyone had. Everyone would be riled as hell when they thought Skye had shot Rowdy tonight.

As he rode, Duff muttered aloud in the direction taken by Skye. "Enjoy your last night on earth, you bastard. Because tomorrow, you're dead."

In the bedroom, Britt had done her best to compose herself in the time since she'd been left alone by Taggart after the man named Skye had paid his unexpected visit.
